How TFSA Contribution Room Works

Your TFSA contribution room starts accumulating the year you turn 18, as long as you are a Canadian resident with a valid SIN. You don't need to open an account or file taxes for the room to accumulate — it happens automatically.

The annual TFSA limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500. For 2024, 2025, and 2026, the limit has been $7,000. Someone eligible since 2009 who has never contributed has a total cumulative room of $109,000.

Withdrawals:When you withdraw from your TFSA, that amount is added back to your contribution room — but not until January 1 of the following year. If you withdraw $5,000 in June 2026 and re-contribute it in September 2026, you've over-contributed by $5,000 (unless you had unused room).

Over-contribution penalty:The CRA charges 1% per month on the highest excess amount for each month it remains. If you realize you've over-contributed, withdraw the excess immediately and file Form RC243.

Province matters for opening: While room accumulates from age 18 everywhere, you can only open a TFSA once you reach the age of majority in your province (18 in some, 19 in others). The room from age 18 is still there when you open the account.
